Chiropractic for Neck Pain: A Patient's Guide
Understanding Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common complaint affecting millions of Australians each year. The neck, or cervical spine, is a complex structure of vertebrae, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves that supports the head and allows for its wide range of motion. This complexity also makes the neck vulnerable to injury and strain.
Most neck pain is caused by poor posture, muscle strain, or wear and tear over time. While it can be uncomfortable and disruptive, the majority of neck pain is not serious and improves with conservative care.
How Chiropractic May Help
Chiropractors are trained to assess and manage neck pain using a variety of techniques. Treatment may include gentle manipulation or mobilisation of the cervical spine, soft tissue therapy, exercise prescription, and advice on posture and ergonomics.
Research suggests that chiropractic care may be effective for certain types of neck pain, particularly mechanical neck pain related to posture or muscle tension. A 2019 systematic review found moderate-quality evidence supporting manual therapy for acute and chronic neck pain.
When to See Your GP Instead
While chiropractic care may help with many cases of neck pain, certain symptoms require immediate medical attention:
- Severe headache with neck stiffness — May indicate meningitis or other serious infection
- Weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms or hands — May indicate nerve compression
- Difficulty walking or balancing — May indicate spinal cord involvement
- Recent significant trauma — Car accidents, falls, or sports injuries
- Fever with neck pain — Could indicate infection
- Unexplained weight loss — Especially with persistent pain
